DEFINITION
Instructional Design is an attempt to improve the effectiveness and appeal of instructional, learning experiences. This is achieved by defining the the needs of the learner, then defining the intended instruction and finally assisting in the learning process, often by simplifing the process or translating the instructions for specifically uneducated users.
Factors such as the setting of the learning are often taken into account in instructional design. This could be teacher led, community based or solely student based learning situations. The intended outcomes of the design model are also considered specific to each intended user type.
Some common steps in Instructional Design are analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation. Each step may be repeated or undertaken simultaneously.
Traditionally , Instructional Design is based on cognitive, behavioural psychology.

Instructables - a website based on "how to's" with content posted by fellow site users.
How Stuff Works - a website that combines quizzes, instructions and puzzles to teach and inform its users.
